Our Curriculum - Intent
Hartshead is a small school with mixed age classes; our curriculum has been designed with precision, so that children can build upon and connect previously acquired knowledge within the cycle.
Hartshead has used the National Curriculum statutory document to ensure that the children have a comprehensive coverage of national expectations and reach the end points, at each stage, of their learning journey.
Our delivery is differentiated within the class to provide challenge and support to children across the age and ability range ensuring that children achieve the correct outcomes.
Our curriculum embeds assessment opportunities so that we can ensure children are making progress. We define progress as children knowing and remembering more.
Please find below some key documents;
- The Curriculum Cycles- key areas and themes to be covered by each class
- Intent, Implementation and Impact
- Intent - the knowledge and skills that pupils will gain
- Implementation - how the curriculum is developed and adopted
- Impact - the outcomes that pupils acheive
- Skills Progression - To ensure that learning is targetted at the appropriate challenge level for all pupils
- Vocabulary Progression - key vocabulary to be taught
- The Primary National Curriculum - the key statutory document from which our curriculum is designed
We share this important information so parents and carers can be informed partners in their child's education. Your child will make even better progress if you know what we are covering in school and you find opportunities to support this. The choices you make around the books and games you buy, days out, the TV and films you watch together, can all contribute to your child's learning.
If you would like to know more about the broad and balanced curriculum offer at Hartshead, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the School Office.

Right to withdraw your child:-
Religious education
Schools have to teach RE but parents can withdraw their children for all or part of the lessons. If you would like to discuss this, please contact the School Office to make an appointment with the Headteacher.
Relationships Education
You cannot withdraw your child from Relationships Education because it is important that all children receive this content, covering topics such as friendships and how to stay safe.
If you do not want your child to take part in some or all of the lessons on Sex Education, you can ask that they are withdrawn. At primary level, the Headteacher must grant this request. The science curriculum in all maintained schools also includes content on human development, including reproduction, which there is no right to withdraw from. If you would like to discuss this, please contact the School Office to make an appointment with the Headteacher.
